Welcome to My House

Sunday Night Sketches

For the twelfth Sunday night sketch, I constructed a house to demonstrate my progress over the course of the semester. When deciding what to draw, I considered how I could utilize a whole image to demonstrate parts of my semester. After debating between a few ideas such as soup, a castle, and a cake, I decided to sketch a house. Each part in the house represents a piece of my semester. For example, the bricks signify the twelve Sunday night sketches I completed. As I completed each Sunday night sketch, I developed a new skill that translated towards a future piece. Thus, the sketches, like bricks, helped build my essays and projects throughout the course. The bricks allowed me to develop my first project: Tracing Maus. Since Tracing Maus required me to learn comics through tracing, I utilized my Sunday sketches to help me grasp key points of the assignment. Consequently, the I represented the Tracing Maus assignment by drawing a roof to demonstrate that it was the first project to fortify skills. As I drew the windows, I specifically drew three to signify the three parts of the literacy narratives I completed. Like windows, the audience can look through these pieces to see the progression of my narrative. After drawing the door, I recognized that it represented the Comparing Stitches and Spinning assignment because I learned how to write an inductive essay which opens the door to new writing possibilities. As an added touch, I drew blueprints to represent the Mapping Climate Change assignment because, like a blueprint, the assignment maps out key concepts. Finally, I attributed the chimney to my process of continuously revising my papers. Like a chimney, it takes fire to revise my mistakes. Overall, I enjoyed this creative piece and I think it was the perfect way to conclude the semester.

I’m McLovin This Sketch!

Sunday Night Sketches

superbad mclovinsuperbad me

For the tenth Sunday night sketch, I recreated a scene from Superbad, my favorite movie. Within the scene, Fogel attempts to purchase alcohol with fake ID. To recreate this scene, I utilized an identical ID, rearranged my hair, and wore a dress shirt to complete his look. This sketch was very enjoyable and I recommend Superbad to anyone who wants to watch a comedic film.

When I began the ninth Sunday Sketch, I wondered if napping would affect my wakefulness for the next day. I determined that I needed to record if I napped, when I originally woke up, the amount of times I hit snooze, the time I got out of bed, if I felt rested, and when I went to sleep. When completing the assignment, I attempted to go to bed and wake up at similar times and alternate when I napped, however, homework and social activities affected my sleeping habits. When collecting the data, I used charts I created in Google Docs to easily display the date, the questions, and the results. Through my data, I’ve determined that I felt more rested the next day when I did not nap compared to when I did nap. The process was fluid and I would complete it in a similar fashion if I continued it throughout the week.

Personally, the ninth Sunday Sketch was greatly beneficial. Although I appreciated learning that napping proceed a restless day, the data that was alarming was my number of bad days. This led me to consider my habits and some of my choices during the week. As I considered these components, I attempted to make changes and continue to reach out to people for support. Consequently, my week improved and I began to have better days throughout my week.

Losing a Sock in The Black Hole

Sunday Night Sketches

Like my other classmates, I had difficulty thinking of an idea for the Sunday sketch assignment. After thinking about it for hours, an idea finally came to me when I was doing laundry. As I retrieve my clothes from the washer, the door in the middle reminded me of a black hole. Thus, I photoshopped an image of a black hole in the washer. While doing the assignment, I had difficulty thinking of the idea and I had difficulty using photoshop, but I am satisfied with the final product.

Do Not Touch The Sand!

Sunday Night Sketches

One week ago, I went to Six Flags with my friend Ankith and Steven. While we were there, we boarded a rollercoaster and were enjoying the slow ride. During the ride, Ankith dared me to touch the sand. When I touched the sand, the ride stopped, an alarm went off, the intercom blared “do not touch the sand,” and everyone stared at me. While I was very embarrassed I noted that it would be a nice story to use for my Sunday night sketch. When creating the comic, I followed Spiegelman’s model. I used simple text, zooms, and transitions to create my story. When creating my comic, the most important choice was using text to demonstrate what happened that day. After finishing the comic, I recognized that this assignment was thought provoking and fun.

The Prioritizer

Sunday Night Sketches

sunday sketch 6.jpgItems:

  1. Anthropology binder- I have an anthropology test on Friday, so I have my binder in my bag so I can study. Though this “studying” may or may not happen, at least I get a workout from carrying extra weight on my back everyday.
  2. History binder- I have a history test on Wednesday, so I have my binder in my bag so I can study.
  3. PACE workbook- This lightweight workbook is required for each class, so I keep it in my bag so I will not forget it. This is necessary because I do not want to forget the book and get yelled at again.
  4. Health workbook- I have a health quiz on friday, so I have it in my bag to study.
  5. History textbook- I will use this to study for my history test on Wednesday.
  6. Headphones- During breaks (and when my RA tells me to turn my music down), I like to listen to music and unwind.
  7. Writing utensils (Pens, pencils, highlighters, and sharpies)- These tools are useful for taking notes, tests, and completing the Sunday night sketch assignments at 4 AM.
  8. Computer- I use my computer to take notes and sometimes to look up NBA highlights.
  9. Computer charger- I keep my computer charger in my bag because my computer is always on 20%.

Before this assignment, I never considered how the items in my bag reflected my personality. However, after dumping each item on the floor, I recognized that the items in my bag demonstrated my trait of prioritization. Rather than filling my bag with every binder and book I owned, I only filled my bag with the items I needed for the week. For example, I carried around my history and anthropology binders with me because I have a test in those classes this week. Thus, the minimal items in my bag reflect my ability to prioritize.

Sunday Sketch 5: Do Not Smoke. Save Your Friends.

Sunday Night Sketches

Within the fifth Sunday sketch, I created a triptych comic that informs the audience of the dangers of secondhand smoking. I began the process by brainstorming ideas and drafting multiple sketches. After selecting my topic of smoking, I wrote down various ways I could incorporate literary components such as irony. Following my brainstorming, I discovered how I could deliver my message to prevent smoking and use irony. In the comic, I utilize irony by choosing to kill Jeff, the nonsmoker, instead of Bob, the smoker. To contribute to the irony, I underlined Jeff’s comment that “[smoking] can kill you” and Bob’s response of “smoking will not kill me.” With the play on words, I have created an ironic and informative piece on why smoking can affect everyone.

While creating this sketch, I found it difficult to deliver a story in only three panels. However, after brainstorming, I realized that I could use two panels to complete the conversation, and utilize the third panel to deliver the message. Compared to our other assignments, I feel that the previous assignments were used as building blocks to create a comic, however, this assignment is unique because it is our first conventional comic.

Heartbreak

Sunday Night Sketches

I wish I could stay here

I wish

I met her eyes

She was not going to reappear in my life

I stepped a little closer

I’d really like to stay

But she gave up and left

Utilizing Katharine Center’s How to Walk Away, I created a poem inspired by Tom Phillips. Within my poem, Heartbreak, I depict man who loves a woman, however, she has given up on him. The chilling story is complemented with a visual of a broken heart. As I was creating the poem, I found it difficult to select my subject matter. My drafts included natural disasters and anxiety, however, I emphasized with the phrases on this page and decided to write my poem about a heartbreak.

Sketch 4

“Hey, that’s a nice bow tie!” “Bow tie? This is a hair tie!”

Sunday Night Sketches

Two days after I submitted my third sketch assignment, I spoke to Professor Morgen about my progress work. After our discussion, I recognized that I misunderstood the instructions of the third sketch assignment, and Professor Morgen generously gifted me an opportunity to revise my work. Initially, I utilized a water bottle to emulate a ship in the bottle, however, the instructions required that I used an object to create a sketch on the page around it. Knowing this, I began brainstorming new ideas to recreate the sketch.

After considering the instructions for a day, I recognized that my friend’s hair tie reminded me of a bow tie. Thus, I decided to draw a man in a tuxedo with the hair tie as a bow tie. Before I began the sketch, I viewed various images of tuxedos to gain inspiration. With a greater understanding of the cut and details within a tux, I began drawing my image. After carefully drawing the sketch in pencil, I finished my image by filling the tux with black ink, tracing the image in pen, and constructing the hair tie as a bow tie.

While I enjoyed expressing my creativity, this assignment served as a reminder to closely analyze instructions when completing projects. I am appreciative that Professor Morgen allowed me to redo this assignment and I look forward to completing future Sunday sketches.

Ship in a Bottle

Sunday Night Sketches

For my third Sunday sketch, I utilized a water bottle and my artistic skills to construct the image of a ship in a bottle. When brainstorming for this sketch, I considered various household items including headphones, keys, and pencil. Ultimately, after studying to the soundtrack of Pirates of the Caribbean, I decided to finish my water bottle and use it as the three dimensional object for my sketch. Initially, I placed the bottle above my illustration of my pirate ship. However, after taking a picture, the image was nebulous. Thus, I carefully tore the paper, slipped it into the bottle, and taped its sides to obtain a clear picture. Conclusively, I enjoyed using a three dimensional object in my Sunday sketch assignment because it challenged my creative perception.IMG_9661
